Biography
Prof. Haydn Chen has completed his PhD from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, USA. He had been a full Professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign for 22 years before joining the City University of Hong Kong as a Chair Professor and Head of the Department in 2000. From 2004 to 2012, he was the President of Tunghai University in Taiwan, then he joined University of Macau in 2012 as a Vice Rector. He is currently a Chair Professor in Materials Science and the CEO for the Office of University Advancement at the National Chiao Tung University in Hsinchu, Taiwan.
Research Interest
Having supervised over 50 MS and PhD students and worked closed with more than 20 research associates and visiting scholars in four universities, Prof. Chen has authored or co-authored over 350 journal articles and delivered more than 250 technical presentations. Dr. Chen’s research has evolved from metals and alloys, in which he pioneered x-ray diffraction studies of kinetic processes of ordering or coarsening in technologically important Ni-based super-alloys, Fe-based shape memory alloys and Al-based light metal alloys, to thin films of electric ceramics such as ferroelectrics, piezoelectrics, nitrides, etc. He is currently working on energy materials including energy harvesting and storage.
